THE CHALLENGES OF IGAMING LOCALIZATION IN CHILEAN SPANISH

Chilean Spanish is one of the many variations of the Spanish language existing in South America (with Brazil being the only South American country that doesn’t speak Spanish.) Not only has it been influenced by other dialects and languages, but it also has several phonetic differences, pronunciations, enunciations and stylistic differences when compared to other South American countries and European Spanish, making it a unique and interesting take on the language.

Some Chilean terminology includes words like “¿cachai?” (roughly, “do you understand?”, which comes from the English term “to catch”), “Me tinca” (roughly, “I think so”, which coincidentally sounds similar to the English “Think”, but it is believed to come from a northern Chilean native indigenous language,) “¿La dura?” (roughly, “Are you serious?”, with “dura” meaning “hard” or “strong”), and many more.
The English language has been widely accepted and strongly influential in modern Chilean Spanish, with terminology that has been directly taken and used as is, such as “Living room”, “Smartphone”, “Notebook”, “Shopping mall” and many more. There are also examples of adaptation, such as Football / Fútbol, Sándwich / Sánduche, Spray/ Espray, and more. As a result, the nationwide use of English terminology in Chilean Spanish has made it easy for most people to understand words such as “online” or “eGaming” on apps and websites.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, to translate is “to express the sense of (words or text) in another language”, but there’s much more to it, especially in the gaming industry. In an area where the same terminology in each individual type of Spanish has different connotations, intentions and meanings, appropriate localized translation carried out by professional local translators is of upmost importance. One term can easily have different meanings in different countries and cultures, or it can mean the opposite or something completely different and out of context in one country and another. Therefore, offering localized translations can help the target market feel more at home, boost their loyalty and create better relationships.

Chilean Spanish might be quite different from other Spanish variants, but with some adjustments carried out by our team, we can make it feel as if it was written by a native Chilean, for a fraction of the market cost and with a better reach per dollar spent on localization.

CHILEAN SPANISH ONLINE GAMING MARKET: CURRENT STATUS

CHILEAN SPANISH ONLINE GAMING MARKET: POTENTIAL

WHY CHOOSE US FOR YOUR CHILEAN SPANISH PROJECT?

From an online casino perspective, Chile is a little bit akin to the wild west, minus the cowboy chaps and fast draw shoot offs at high noon. Falling behind their Latin American counterparts when it comes to regulation, ultimately coming down to the players themselves to judge whether a casino is legitimate.

Most players are staying away from shady local casino operators which can, unfortunately lead to fraud or just an overall below-par gambling experience.

As most casinos are low quality, with a narrow choice of games to choose from, iGaming in Chile is in a sad state.

With land-based casinos only recently being regulated, it’s a step in the right direction for online casinos which will hopefully follow suit in the near future. Unfortunately, our iGaming crystal ball is a little cloudy regarding the future of regulation of online casinos in Chile. With the potential for massive tax revenue for the Chilean government, it could be very possible that the future of Chilean online gaming will be one of a safe environment for players, fully regulated and legitimate.

We recommend you to involve your language service provider as early as possible in the Chilean Spanish localization process. This way, you will avoid pitfalls and the need to rework later, meaning you will experience no delays in getting your global growing going. We are quick, reliable, and a highly trusted partner across the gaming industry.

We have a world-class localization team for Chilean Spanish and have spent the last decade recruiting Chilean Spanish writers with a big passion for games and sports and an impeccable understanding of iGaming terminology.
