All-in Global is the #1 language service provider for the iGaming industry. With 12 years of data we believe it’s relevant for our viewers to know how our localization projects are divided. Our staff tend to choose “marketing creative” when it’s not clear how a project should be classified, so this number is often too high in comparison.

THE CHALLENGES OF IGAMING LOCALIZATION IN COLOMBIAN SPANISH

Colombia, in the northern part of South America, with Spanish as the official language in all of its territory. However, Colombian Spanish is subtly different from that of Europe and other Southern American countries, and even inside the country there are small regional differences on how it’s spoken.

For example, while the formal treatment “usted” is widely used in many regions for every day conversations, even to address parents, spouse and children, people from the Caribbean Coast, characterised by its relaxed atmosphere, tend to use more informal treatments, like the “voseo” and “tuteo”, leaving the use of “usted” only for formal situations. Nevertheless, this latter form and its associated grammar can be safely used in any localization, since it’s universally understood and accepted.

Decisions are best made by the local translators to determine the most fitting terminology. For instance, while “Slot machines” can be translated as “MET”, which stands for “Máquinas Electrónicas Tragamonedas”, in practice no online casino uses this term, opting instead for “Tragamonedas” or “Slots”.

Regarding in-Game terms, many of them have been traditionally kept in English. One example is “Wild”, which can be translated as “Comodín”, but is often left untouched. The main reason is that the word is usually part of the game graphics (which are typically unlocalized), and therefore players are used to see it on-screen and understand the functon of its symbol without translation. “Scatter” is another word often left untranslated, in this case because there’s not any obvious Spanish equivalent. Regarding “Jackpot”, it’s both translated and untranslated; the problem for this particular term is that it can be translated in a number of ways, none of them particularly better than the others, and besides the English word is usually understood by players.

All of the above notwithstading, the most common challenge for the translator is not having access to the actual game graphics, as well as being unable to test the finished localization. The former can be solved if a video of the gameplay, or the slot itself, can be found online, but localization testing is quite uncommon. In some cases, the client is very specific about what they want translated or untranslated, which simplifies things for localizators.
