THE CHALLENGES OF IGAMING LOCALIZATION IN MONTENEGRIN

Montenegro is relatively a small country (13,812m2/5,333sq mi), especially compared to its neighbors, Serbia and Croatia (88,361m2/34,116sq mi and 56,594m2/21,851sq mi, respectively). For comparison, California spreads across 423,970m2 or 163,696sq mi. As such, and having an estimated population of 622,359 people, localization to Montenegrin is often unjustly regarded by many translators as a minuscule task. For example, many would simply use Serbian language rules and apply them to Montenegrin.

Professionalism is displayed in utmost attention to detail and in striving to achieve the best result, regardless of how big or small the task is. This is something we at All-in Global know well, and that’s why we take the following into account when working on localization to Montenegrin.

Montenegrin dialect:

Montenegrin uses a form of Shtokavian (ijekavian) dialect. Let’s look at an example using the official anthem of Montenegro “Oj svijetla majska zoro” (Oh Bright Dawn of May):

Montenegrin Latin Serbian Latin English
Oj svijetla majska zoro.
Majko naša Crna Goro.
Sinovi smo tvog stijenja
I čuvari tvog poštenja
Oj svetla majska zoro
Majko naša Crna Goro
Sinovi smo tog stenja
I čuvari tvog poštenja
Oh, bright dawn of May.
Our mother Montenegro.
We are sons of your rocks
And keepers of your honesty

In the simplest of terms, this means that there is often an additional “ij” in some words. It implies that Montenegrin words and sentences are somewhat longer than in Serbian and in English — an important matter to remember when working on segments with character limits. On occasion, this important distinction is overlooked, by accident (the translator is not a native speaker) or by design (agency or client wants to save money by copy-pasting Serbian translation) but it’s a bad practice. Localization of content should take into account all cultural aspects and the Montenegrin language is not an exception. Nobody wants to look bad in front of its audience.

Similarities with Serbian:

Even a person not familiar with Montenegrin or Serbian will immediately notice by looking at the above example that the two languages are similar. Montenegrin also has cases (which we described in our text about the challenges of iGaming localization to Serbian, you can read it here) and it uses two scripts, Latin and Cyrillic. Both scripts are understood by Montenegrin, but Latin is arguably more popular.

Solution:

You want a professional agency working with native speakers attentive to detail, that can get the job done properly and swiftly — you’ll love working with All-in Global on localizing your gaming content to Montenegrin.

MONTENEGRIN ONLINE GAMING MARKET: CURRENT STATUS

MONTENEGRIN ONLINE GAMING MARKET: POTENTIAL

WHY CHOOSE US FOR YOUR MONTENEGRIN PROJECT?

Gambling has officially been legal in Montenegro since 2006, with online casino legalization following relatively closely in 2011. The Balkan state also started issuing online gambling licenses at the end of January 2012.

Continued growth saw an increasing number of foreign operators enter the market as the industry is going from strength to strength. Since Featuring in James Bond’s Texas Hold ’em outing in Casino Royale, Montenegro has been synonymous with the casino scene, both land-based and online.

Due to the accessible nature of obtaining a Montenegrin online casino license, it has caused ripples of controversy with payment providers that may go as far as to actually block payments from a Montenegro-licensed online iGaming operator. Licenses start from €25,000 for the initial year and are priced at €9,000 for every year after and there are is no minimum capital requirement for prospective operators.

So, from an operator’s perspective, Montenegro probably isn’t the best place to base your operation. Although, that’s not saying players aren’t enjoying a flourishing iGaming experience from operators based in other locations.

We recommend you to involve your language service provider as early as possible in the Montenegrin localization process. This way, you will avoid pitfalls and the need to rework later, meaning you will experience no delays in getting your global growing going. We are quick, reliable, and a highly trusted partner across the gaming industry.

We have a world-class localization team for Montenegrin and have spent the last decade recruiting Montenegrin writers with a big passion for games and sports and an impeccable understanding of iGaming terminology. We also offer SEO and audiovisual services in Montenegrin.
