All-in Global is the #1 language service provider for the iGaming industry. With 12 years of data we believe it’s relevant for our viewers to know how our localization projects are divided. Our staff tend to choose “marketing creative” when it’s not clear how a project should be classified, so this number is often too high in comparison.

THE CHALLENGES OF IGAMING LOCALIZATION IN GREEK

Localizing iGaming texts in Greek can be challenging primarily due to the Greek language’s morphology. While most European languages from which we translate use the Latin alphabet, the Greek alphabet is unique and this can lead to a variety of issues concerning how the final text will appear to the user. Indicatively, because Greek uses accents in small letters but not in capital letters the translation of “bet” and “BET” is not morphologically the same. In the first instance, it would be «ποντάρισμα» while in the second «ΠΟΝΤΑΡΙΣΜΑ» without the accent. This may seem a minuscule detail yet to the Greek native speaker such a slight would appear as if the text was not professionally translated giving instead the impression of a rushed, machine translation. This is why it is very important that any change to the original text or content is always proofread and amended accordingly by a human translator.

Another challenge concerns the context. Even if there is a terminology base available to the client, Greek words change significantly depending on the grammatical and syntactical environment, therefore they need to be translated ad hoc. For example, if we take the term “player” it can be translated with at least two different words in Greek: «παίκτης» in the nominative and «παίκτη» in the accusative. If there is an added adjective then things get more complicated since the adjective has to be inflected as well to match the noun. The same applies to verbs and articles. This is why it is always advisable that the translator be provided with sufficient context and/or the final text be proofread for any inconsistencies.

Finally, a challenge of iGaming localization pertains to successful SEO or else search-engine optimization. SEO is a multifaceted service that reaches far beyond translation. That being said, translators of iGaming texts in particular need to be skillful in this aspect as well. This is especially true in Greek because many gambling terms are predominantly used in English and/or other source languages, e.g. scatter, live casino, voisins du zero, etc. While a translator’s initial response would be to translate everything to their target language, they should always take into consideration the popularity of each term. Since we mostly translate for user and industry interfaces, preferring the more common word is a better choice for our clients. This guarantees greater visibility of their pages in the various search engines.

As you can see translating iGaming content from Greek or to Greek is a complex task but our experienced and talented Greek translators are here to help you succeed in any iGaming localization project.

GREEK ONLINE GAMING MARKET: CURRENT STATUS

GREEK ONLINE GAMING MARKET: POTENTIAL

WHY CHOOSE US FOR YOUR GREEK PROJECT?

Historically, since the inception of online casinos at the turn of the millennium, the Greek government has strongly opposed online gambling of any kind, pushing through a policy to ban all electronic forms of gaming.

2011 saw a swift U-turn from the authorities and land-based slots and online casinos were once again legalised in a bid to raise profits from taxes and operator license fees. In 2013, once again there were changes to the current policy and the Greece’s gaming regulatory body, OPAP was granted a monopoly on all iGaming ventures.

The OPAP monopoly expires in 2030, already showing signs that in has not had the desired effect on the country’s economy, reporting a 71% downturn in profits in 2013 alone.

Should the country once again open its doors to online casinos, many operators may not choose to return due to massive back taxes being levied. Although technically illegal, there’s no Greek firewall blocking players from enjoying a game or two online, with poker being the Grecian favourite.

We recommend you to involve your language service provider as early as possible in the Greek localization process. This way, you will avoid pitfalls and the need to rework later, meaning you will experience no delays in getting your global growing going. We are quick, reliable, and a highly trusted partner across the gaming industry.

We have a world-class localization team for Greek and have spent the last decade recruiting Greek writers with a big passion for games and sports and an impeccable understanding of iGaming terminology. We also offer SEO and audiovisual services in Greek.
