THE CHALLENGES OF IGAMING LOCALIZATION IN DUTCH FLEMISH

Translation of online games might seem like a really fun job – and it is – but don’t underestimate the difficulty of it! Localization of iGames is not an easy feat, and there are several reasons for this.
For starters, a Flemish translation is generally longer than English. This might not seem so much of an issue, but a lot of games are bound by UI so you need to be brief and to the point so the text fits in the restricted space of the message boxes and buttons … Brevity is key!

Since the online gaming industry is an ever-expanding market and a quite recent one, translators tend to just use the English words for a lot of the terms. They might be perfectly able to find a good solid Flemish translation for the term, but it would sound strange and unfamiliar to the people who’d play the game in Flemish and they are much more likely to just use the English terms. This is especially true for the esports market with games like League of Legends, Fifa and Call of Duty where players are more familiar with the English terms than the Dutch/Flemish ones since they often also play these games in English.

In Flemish is common to use a polite form of address, which is ‘u’ (formal) rather than ‘jij’ (informal) when addressing someone. This is different in Dutch (from the Netherlands) where informal speech is more commonly used. Ironically, Flemish people usually drop the “please” that English often uses to explain things to a user. For example in English it is common to say “Please make sure that you have the latest version of the app installed”, in Dutch they will drop the ‘please’ and just say “Make sure you have the latest version of the app”. This makes the text easier to read and less laborious in Flemish.
It can get extra confusing when we the Flemish people also use French terms like Roulette where we have both English and French words for certain terms since there are different types of Roulette. For example, both ‘carré’ (French) and ‘corner bet’ (American) are used for the same thing. It is thus essential that the translator knows which terms are commonly used in French and which ones in English and that the translator uses these terms consistently to avoid confusion.

Another challenge while translating iGaming content are placeholders. These are small pieces of code that could be in the form of an all caps word or could be something like ‘%1$s’. It is very important to keep these in the right place in the sentence and not to alter or delete them as this can cause major issues in the game.
So localizing iGaming is not just a matter of translating the words. You also have to create the excitement and atmosphere of the casino, the comradeship and thrill of the games, using the language the players are familiar with. And this is exactly where the qualified translators of All-in Global come into the game.

FLEMISH ONLINE GAMING MARKET: CURRENT STATUS

FLEMISH ONLINE GAMING MARKET: POTENTIAL

WHY CHOOSE US FOR YOUR FLEMISH PROJECT?

Flemish, also known as Flemish Dutch, Belgian Dutch or Southern Dutch is spoken by around 6.5 million people. The legal age to participate in online casino play is 21 in Belgium, as opposed to 18 years old in neighbouring European countries.

Known locally as the Kansspelcommissie in Flemish, and Commission de Jeux de Hasard in French, is the Belgian online casino regulator that issues licenses to iGaming operators. Currently, the local population are only permitted to play at online casinos which hold a license from the aforementioned regulatory bodies.

Belgian online casino operators are unfortunately few and far between which is stifling the industry. As a greater number of Flemish speakers take to using a VPN to access online sites, a solid VPN which can overcome geo-block restrictions is a must for the would-be Flemish-speaking iGamer.

While other European countries adopt a more open attitude towards accepting online casino operators within their jurisdiction, it seems the smart money is on the Belgian authorities soon to follow suit.

We recommend you to involve your language service provider as early as possible in the Flemish localization process. This way, you will avoid pitfalls and the need to rework later, meaning you will experience no delays in getting your global growing going. We are quick, reliable, and a highly trusted partner across the gaming industry.

We have a world-class localization team for Flemish and have spent the last decade recruiting Flemish writers with a big passion for games and sports and an impeccable understanding of iGaming terminology. We also offer SEO and audiovisual services in Flemish.
